Today’s most popular 100 English baby names in England
It’s almost easier to list what England hasn’t brought to the modern world than to list some things that it has, so here we go: flavorful food and stick-and-ball sports that make sense. Okay, so they’ve got shepherd’s pie and fish & chips. (You still can’t explain cricket.)
If you’re the sort who can trace their family tree back to the Battle of Hastings, or you just want to give your bundle of joy a right proper English name, check out our list of the top 100 sprog names in England for a cracking good baby name.
This list of top names was compiled and released in 2020, based on births during 2019.
Of the data, the United Kingdom’s Office for National Statistics wrote that for girls, “Mothers aged 35 years and over continued to choose more traditional names like Charlotte and Emily, while younger mothers opted for more modern names like Harper and Mia.”
For boys, of the top 10 boys’ names chosen by moms under age 25, seven had not featured in the top 100 boys’ names prior to the late 1990s. In contrast, 8 oof the 10 names for boys chosen by moms age 35 years or order had been among the top 100 before the late 1990s (and but one name was a shortened version of a traditional name).
They also noted some popularity spikes based on popular media.
- Taron has increased in popularity, which might be influenced by the actor Taron Egerton, who starred in the 2019 award-winning Elton John biopic, Rocketman.
- Continuing the cinematic trends, the name Kylo (for Kylo Ren) appears to have increased in popularity since the release of the new Star Wars sequel trilogy.
- In contrast, a girls’ name that may have increased following the rise to fame of a celebrity is the name Dua. Dua Lipa, the popstar, had her first UK number one single in 2017.
