New York-inspired baby names

by Tanya Glover

A New York state of mind

When you think of New York you may think of terrific pizza, Times Square, Central Park and hundreds of honking yellow cabs. If you adore these things, or are a lover of New York in general, you may want to give your child a name that reflects your love affair with one the greatest cities in America — The Big Apple!

Cities and streets

Some of the best baby names come from the streets and cities of New York. Maybe you want to name your baby after your favorite area of New York or the place where you grew up. There are several wonderful options. The state capital of New York is Albany, which is also a solid name for little girls. Brooklyn is also a popular name that can be used for both boys and girls. (And if you like Brooklyn for your little girl, you can even separate it as so: Brook Lynn.)

The Bronx is a popular choice for a little boy, as is York. Other great city names are Harlem (unisex), Manhattan (boy), and Broadway (girl).

Things to do, places to be

New York is filled with awesome attractions, and from these you can find great baby names.

Two of the most famous buildings in New York City are the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, so perhaps you can consider Empire (unisex) or Chrysler (boy). Two other significant places in New York that come to mind are The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Both Liberty (girl) and Ellis (boy) are great choices. Chelsea (girl) is a popular place to hang out, as is Greenwich (boy) Village. If you go down to Radio City Music Hall, you can see the Rockettes perform; a memorable experience indeed! If you love them like I do, you can choose to name your boy Rocky, or your girl Rockette.

Is shopping your thing? Tiffany (girl) is located in New York — and where else would you go to shop but Madison (unisex) Avenue? Trump Towers, owned by Donald Trump (boy) is a must-see as well. There are hundreds of things to do in New York, so browse through a guidebook for the city for some more inspiration.

The city of sports

New York is famous for baseball, and in fact has two teams: the Mets and the Yankees. If you are a fan then there are many names for you to choose from. Yankee is a great name for a boy. I am not sure how well the name Met would go over — but if you want to throw some class into the name, you can go with their original name (for which the name Met is short): the Metropolitan.

You can also look at some names of team members both past and present. The most famous Yankee ever was Babe Ruth. Both of these names are awesome — together or separately. One of the most popular players presently is Derek Jeter. Again, both of these names are excellent for your boy.

The celebs are doing it

It is all the rage for celebrities to give their children names straight out of New York. The Beckhams named their oldest son Brooklyn. (Their newest addition has been named Harper Seven, so they certainly do not lack creativity.) They are not the only ones who have New York babies, though! Case in point: Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz named their son Bronx. And then we all know that New York is known as the Big Apple, so the name Apple is growing in popularity. In fact, actress Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay’s Chris Martin named their daughter Apple.

Find your muse

If you want to name your baby after somewhere in the state or city of New York, you need to actually get yourself to New York! Walk around and take in the sights, sounds and smells. This will help you find inspiration — and find the perfect name for your little city boy or girl.
