Maxwell is connected to the name Maccus, who was a noble of Norwegian descent in the court of David I, King of Scotland. Maccus received from this monarch a grant of land on the River Tweed. On the land, there was an attached fishery that had a water wheel. The name “Maxwell” actually was dervied from “Maccus’ Wheel” for this water wheel.
