The truth of the matter seems to be that no one knows quite certainly how the surname Bliss originated.

However, some good authorities do not hesitate to put it in the list with names derived from abstract virtues.

When these qualities — such as Chance, Love and Charity — were represented by characters in old pageants, and so it probably came to pass that one who represented Bliss in such a dramatic performance took this as a surname.
